Commit
to Quit on November 21, 2002!
The Great American
Smokeout is held every year to help smokers quit cigarettes for at least
one day, in hopes they will quit forever.
The American Cancer
Society organized the first Great American Smokeout in 1977, when smokers
tried to quit for one day to prove that they could do it.
|
Each
year, more Americans try to quit smoking on the day of the Great
American Smokeout than any other day of the year, including New
Year's Day!
|
As times have changed,
the focus of the Great American Smokeout has evolved from simply helping
adults quit smoking to helping children and teenagers understand they
should never start smoking in the first place. The Great American Smokeout
is also a time for Americans to renew their commitment to a smoke-free
environment for themselves and for their children.
